Colors of India – Thewa Jewelry

Slide 1

This summer we went to Indian city of colors – Jaipur, Rajasthan. During our trip, we visited a factory of Thewa Jewelry. Jewelry inspires every woman. But witnessing the process with once own eye is all together a different experience. I realized how labour intensive a task can be to just make a single piece of jewelry look elegant and awe-inspiring. Thewa Jewelry is one of the jewelry whose process is not only time  consuming but also exhaustive.

 It is art and tradition:
Thewa is a jewelry making art which originated during Mughals period in Pratapgarh district of Rajasthan, India. This great art has been carried forward from generations to generations for almost 400 years. Ins’t it unbelievable!
 1. It starts with fragments of terrecota combined with some chemicals to form a thick paste.
 2. Paste is then spread over the board made from timber, then gold sheet of 23k is set on to the paste.
 3. The design is impressed on gold sheet before placing. Design is made with dark color so that it is clearly visible to be stencilled later.
 4. Extra gold is removed later.
 5. Colored glass is then treated to give it a glittering effect so that once it is merged with gold, it gets the mesmerizing look.

 6. Colored glass is used as the base for gold. It basically forms the unit for the set. It is this combination of gold and glass which makes thewa jewelry special.
 7. Gold foil is then attached to base which is then mounted on a silver foil.
 8. The unit formed is later given the shape – oval, round, square, rectangle and many other.

Be it any shape or design, the final jewelry piece created is truly incredible. I got few pieces of jewelry as a souvenir from the city. It get the glimpse of artist whenever I wear them.
